Comfort in Ergonomic Chairs – 3 Ways to Compute in Comfort

To be comfortable when sitting in an ergonomic chair for using on the computer; it is important to remember that your position is never static. This is not suggesting that you have to get up and walk around every 5 minutes. No, the movements are more subtle and more purposeful, so that your awareness is more on the task of typing.

What you need to realize is that you cannot remain comfortable while sitting, unless your body physically moves like a well-oiled machine; otherwise it becomes ‘rusty’ or stiff without movement. Here are 3 suggestions that will help to make the body move while sitting working on the computer:

1. Begin by performing the Sunrise Salutation, which will wake up your whole spine and pelvic area. This means placing your hands in the prayer position in front of you. Now take a deep breath and at the same time move your finger tips towards you and lift your elbows up high. Now as you breathe out slowly let the arms separate, stretching out to the sides bringing them down into a big arc. Then they will return back to the prayer position.

You should now feel an enormous relief of tension in your body, with feelings of calmness and a wonderful surge of energy for accomplishing the task of sitting at your computer. This is a wonderful start to any activity and will energize your ready for any performance activity.

2. Next position a glass of water strategically where you can to reach for it. This means that any time you need to hydrate yourself; your body needs to stretch to have access to the drink. Start simple, by positioning the drink with a small reach; then as your body learns to improve its balance, move the position of the water farther out of reach. Your body will appreciate the stretch, as well as the sips of water.

3. Change the position of your feet, which changes your sitting balance in your ergonomic chair. It means you can start by:

a) Stretching them both out in front of you, so you can wiggle your toes and your ankles.

b) Next change their position to being firmly flat on the floor, so you can either lift your toes, or your heels off the ground as you sit.

c) Then move them to being curled up around the ergonomic chair. Now you have a variety of positions to rest your feet, so they feel relaxed and comfortable.

These three movements requested make very little demand on your body, but your body is moving in very small but important ways. Your balance mechanism remains stimulated by simple purposeful movement.

Your body is a very fine and intricate machine that responds well to small and subtle movements, to stimulate the balance mechanism in your pelvis. Movement of your pelvis is the most important area when sitting, because it needs to remain constantly balanced by constantly being stimulated with active movement.
